The Complete Guide to Microneedling: What to Expect Before, During, and After Treatment

Microneedling is one of my favorite treatments because it works with your skin, not against it. Instead of masking concerns, it stimulates your body's own collagen production to improve skin texture, fine lines, acne scars, enlarged pores, and overall skin quality.

One of the most common things I hear from new patients is:

"I really want to do it...I'm just nervous about what the healing process is like."

That's completely understandable.

There is a lot of information online, and unfortunately, much of it is either overly dramatic or leaves out the details that actually matter.

My goal is to make sure you know exactly what to expect so you feel confident from the moment you leave your appointment until you're enjoying your results.

Whether you're looking for microneedling in Puyallup, Bonney Lake, Lake Tapps, Sumner, Auburn, Graham, Orting, Buckley, or the surrounding communities, understanding the healing process is just as important as the treatment itself. I want every patient at Precision & Grace Aesthetics to leave feeling informed, prepared, and excited about their results.

What Does Microneedling Actually Do?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, creates thousands of precise microchannels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries signal your body to begin repairing itself by producing new collagen and elastin.

Collagen is what gives skin its firmness, strength, and smooth appearance. As we age, our natural collagen production slows, which is why fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and skin laxity begin to develop.

By stimulating your body's natural healing response, microneedling improves:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne scars

  • Surgical scars

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Enlarged pores

  • Mild skin laxity

  • Sun damage

  • Overall skin tone and radiance

The best part? The improvements continue developing for weeks after your treatment as new collagen is formed.

Does Microneedling Help with Pigmentation?

Yes, but with an important distinction.

Microneedling can significantly improve many types of pigmentation, including sun damage, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (such as acne marks), and uneven skin tone.

As your skin renews itself, pigmented cells gradually shed and are replaced with healthier, more even-toned skin. The treatment also creates temporary microchannels that allow professional-grade brightening products to penetrate more effectively.

Some deeper forms of pigmentation, such as melasma, require a more customized treatment plan because they can worsen with excessive heat or inflammation. During your consultation, we'll determine whether microneedling is the right treatment, or whether another approach would give you better results.

Can You Get Microneedling During the Summer?

Absolutely.

Living in the Pacific Northwest means we enjoy every sunny day we get, and you don't have to stop your skincare treatments because it's summer.

You simply need to protect your investment.

After your microneedling treatment, your skin is temporarily more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) exposure while it's healing. Protecting your skin during this time helps prevent unnecessary irritation and reduces the risk of developing additional pigmentation.

For the first several days after treatment, I recommend:

  • Avoiding prolonged direct sun exposure

  • Wearing a wide-brimmed hat if you'll be outdoors

  • Applying a mineral SPF 30 or higher every day

  • Avoiding swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and heavy exercise for 24–48 hours

Think of sunscreen as part of your treatment, not an optional extra.

What Does Healing Look Like?

One of the reasons I love educating patients is because the healing process is completely normal, but it can be surprising if no one prepares you for it.

Day One: Redness and Warmth

Immediately after treatment, your skin will feel similar to a mild sunburn.

You may notice:

  • Redness

  • Warmth

  • Tightness

  • Mild sensitivity

This is exactly what we expect and simply means your skin has begun its natural repair process.

During this time, focus on gentle cleansing, hydration, and the post-treatment products we recommend.

Days Two and Three: Rough Texture

As your skin begins renewing itself, it often develops a rough, dry texture that feels similar to very fine sandpaper. Some people experience this, while others don't.

This is not your skin becoming damaged, it's simply old skin cells preparing to naturally shed.

Avoid exfoliating, scrubbing, or picking at the skin. Allow the healing process to happen on its own.

Why Do My Pores Look Bigger?

This is one of the most common questions I receive.

The good news is your pores have not actually become larger.

During the healing process, oil and debris that were sitting deeper in the pores begin moving toward the surface. Combined with temporary dryness, pores can appear more noticeable for a few days.

Once your skin finishes healing and collagen remodeling continues, pores typically appear smoother and more refined than before treatment.

When Can I Wear Makeup Again?

I recommend waiting at least 24 hours before applying makeup.

If possible, giving your skin 48 hours without makeup is even better.

This allows the microchannels to close completely and minimizes the risk of irritation or breakouts while your skin barrier is recovering.

Can I Go Back to Work?

Yes.

Most patients return to work the following day.

You'll likely still have some pinkness, especially if you have fair skin, but there is no medical downtime that requires you to stay home.

If your schedule allows, many patients enjoy booking Thursday or Friday appointments so they can have the weekend to recover before returning to work on Monday.

When Will I See Results?

You'll likely notice healthier, brighter skin within the first week once the initial healing is complete.

The collagen-building process, however, takes time.

Most patients begin seeing more noticeable improvements around four to six weeks after treatment, including smoother texture, softer fine lines, firmer skin, and gradual improvement in acne scarring.

For optimal collagen stimulation, I often recommend a series of treatments based on your skin goals. During your consultation, we'll create a treatment plan that's tailored specifically to your skin and your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling

Does microneedling hurt?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the treatment is. Before we begin, I apply a prescription-strength topical numbing cream that significantly minimizes discomfort. You'll likely feel some pressure and vibration, with certain areas (such as the forehead or around the mouth) being a little more sensitive than others. Most patients rate the treatment between a 2 and 4 out of 10.

How many microneedling treatments will I need?

It depends on your goals.

If you're looking to refresh your skin and boost collagen production, many patients benefit from a series of three to four treatments spaced about four to six weeks apart.

If we're treating acne scars, deeper wrinkles, or more significant texture concerns, additional treatments may be recommended. During your consultation, we'll create a personalized treatment plan based on your skin and your goals.

How long does a microneedling appointment take?

Plan on about 60 to 90 minutes for your appointment. This includes your consultation, numbing time, treatment, and reviewing your aftercare instructions.

When can I wash my face after microneedling?

You can gently cleanse your face later that evening or the following morning using a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser. Avoid scrubs, retinoids, acids, or active skincare ingredients until your skin has healed and I've cleared you to resume your regular routine. You will also receive a curated recovery kit from Precision and Grace Aesthetics.

How much does microneedling cost?

The cost of microneedling depends on the treatment area and whether additional therapies are included. Because every treatment is customized, I recommend scheduling a consultation so we can discuss your goals and determine the best treatment plan for your skin.
