Laser Hair Removal in Puyallup, WA
How laser hair removal works
The laser sends light that the pigment (melanin) in your hair absorbs. That light becomes heat, and the heat travels down the hair shaft to damage the follicle that grows it. The surrounding skin stays protected, and my laser's built-in cooling keeps treatments comfortable.
Why it takes multiple sessions: the hair growth cycle
Each hair on your body is in one of three phases at any given time:
Anagen (active growth). The hair is attached to the follicle, so this is the only phase where the laser can do lasting damage.
Catagen (transition). The hair starts detaching from its blood supply.
Telogen (resting). The old hair sheds and the follicle rests before it starts a new cycle.
Only a fraction of your hairs are in the growth phase on any treatment day. That's why I space sessions several weeks apart and recommend a series of six: each visit catches a new group of follicles in their active phase. Most clients see a meaningful, long-lasting reduction over the series, although results vary. Some people come back for occasional maintenance sessions.
Why fall and winter is the best time to start
Your skin needs to stay out of the sun and away from tanning before and after each session. Tanned skin has more pigment competing with the hair, which raises the risk of burns and pigment changes. Fall and winter are when you're covered up, out of the sun, and not trying to shave every day for the pool. If you start in October or November, you can finish most of a six-session series by late spring, just in time for shorts and swimsuits.
Who is a good candidate?
Laser works best on hair that has pigment, so darker hair responds most. Blonde, gray, white, and red hair has little melanin for the laser to target and usually doesn't respond well. During your consultation, I'll look at your skin tone, hair color and thickness, medications, and health history. Then I'll tell you honestly whether laser is a good fit and which settings are safest for your skin. If you're pregnant, have a recent tan, are taking photosensitizing medications, or have an active skin infection in the area, we'll wait or talk about other options.
What to expect at your appointment
Most people describe the feeling as a quick snap, like a rubber band, with cooling in between. Small areas like the lip or underarms take a few minutes. Larger areas like full legs take longer. Right afterward, it's normal to see some redness and small bumps around the follicles, a little like a mild sunburn. This usually settles within hours to a day or two. Over the next one to three weeks, treated hairs shed. This can look like regrowth, but it's the hair working its way out.
Before your visit
Shave the area 12–24 hours before (please don't wax, pluck, or thread for at least 4 weeks beforehand. The laser needs the root intact).
Avoid sun, tanning beds, and self-tanner for at least 2 weeks.
Arrive with clean skin, no lotion, deodorant, or makeup on the treatment area.
Tell me about any new medications, especially antibiotics, acne treatments, or anything that makes you sun-sensitive.
Aftercare
Use daily SPF 30+ on treated areas, and avoid direct sun and tanning between sessions.
Skip hot tubs, saunas, intense workouts, and fragranced products for 24–48 hours.
Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. A cool compress helps if the area feels warm.
Shaving between sessions is fine. Avoid waxing or plucking.
Contact me if you notice blistering, crusting, or anything that worries you.
Safety
Laser is a medical procedure, and I treat it that way. I assess each client before the first pulse, test settings when needed, and adjust as your skin and hair change across the series. Every session is done by a licensed nurse practitioner, not delegated. Side effects are usually mild and temporary, but changes in skin color, blistering, or a less-than-expected reduction can happen, and results vary from person to person. I'll go over all of this with you in advance so nothing is a surprise.

Frequently asked questions
How many sessions will I need? Most people do a series of six, spaced several weeks apart, because of the hair growth cycle. Some areas, like the face, which is often hormonally driven, may need more or periodic maintenance. Results vary.
Is laser hair removal permanent? It's considered permanent hair reduction. Many clients see a significant, long-lasting decrease, but some hairs can regrow over time, especially with hormonal changes. Touch-up sessions can help.
Does it hurt? Most people feel a quick snap with cooling. Sensitive areas like the bikini or upper lip feel more intense, but each pulse lasts only a moment.
Can I shave between sessions? Yes. Shaving is fine and is actually recommended before each visit. Avoid waxing, plucking, threading, and epilating, since those remove the root the laser needs.
Does it work on light or gray hair? Usually not well. The laser targets pigment, so blonde, gray, white, and red hair have little for it to target. I'll tell you honestly at your consultation.
Can I do laser if I have darker skin? Often, yes. Safety depends on matching the settings to your skin type. I'll assess your skin and may do a test spot before your first full session.
How far apart are sessions? Usually 4–8 weeks, depending on the area. Facial hair cycles faster than leg hair.
Can I treat more than one area at a time? Yes. Many clients pair areas, such as underarms and bikini. We'll plan your packages together during your consultation.
Can I get laser hair removal in Bonney Lake? No. Laser hair removal is offered only at my Puyallup studio inside Sola Salon, about 15 minutes from Bonney Lake. (IPL, tattoo removal, and dermal filler are Puyallup-only as well. Microneedling, peels, Botox, and IV are available in Bonney Lake.)
